New Banned and (unbanned) List Release

Nick here with Wizardden.com 's Team Rogue T3ch. As many of you noticed this morning Wizard's of the Coast release their update to the Banned and Restricted lists.

Banned in Modern

- Birthing Pod
- Treasure Cruise
- Dig Through Time

Unbanned in Modern

- Golgari Grave Troll

Banned in Legacy

- Treasure Cruise

Unbanned in Legacy

- Worldgorger Dragon

Legacy

- Treasure Cruise (Restricted)
- Gifts Ungiven (Unrestrcited)

My first thought?

But after reviewing WOTC article the bannings are completely understandable. Lets be honest, we all knew Treasure Cruise was just a little too good, and was extremely likely to see the ban hammer.

Birthing Pod is understandable just from the amount of pod decks that show up (and win) at high level modern events. Although Modern Pod players are extremely disappointed, but again for the integrity of the format, its a good ban.

Dig Through Time is a little bit of a head scratcher. WOTC official reasoning is, "while a Delver deck might use Treasure Cruse over Dig Through Time banning one but not the other would do little to change the deck."

To an extend they are correct, R/U Delver would probably just swap into Dig. However this is a slightly weaker trade, and probably not worth a ban. Dig is slightly harder to cast, and only nets 1 card (although probably gains 2x cards that are extremely helpful in the match). Unlike Treasure Cruse, it doesn't generate the same raw card advantage.

Legacy – (Section Written by Joseph McKercher)

With treasure cruise banned, shardless BUG delver might see a resurgence as the plan of having
2 for 1’s is easier when they are unable to Ancestral recall back into the game.  RUG delver might see a resurgence as well as tarmogoyfs are bigger now that you don’t exile your graveyard to draw three
cards. This should bring a bit of diversity to the control decks that exist.
Reanimator is currently a deck that doesn't have much of a use for Worldgorger dragon.  It
needs a bit of a redesign for it to get around the loop that is created.  It is an interesting piece to an
already flexible deck that could fight through hate.  It may bring about an entirely new version of
Reanimator, only time will tell.

Vintage –
Having 5x Ancestral Recall in your deck, even if situational, made decks more consistent in
Vintage.  It won’t hurt anything that currently exists too much but it’s a limiting factor still.
The bigger note is gifts being unbanned.  It allows decks to put more toolbox cards in and is a
good way to fight shop decks as if you’re getting to 4 with a deck designed around gifts, you can include
a slot for hate against more decks.  Gifts does a lot more for combo and consistency then Treasure
Cruise will ever do.  This may get banned again depending on how strong it ends up in the format.

Thats it for now guys.
