Leading the Charge on a Tiny Endeavor

Covering the happenings in the casual corner of MTG, this is Ariel at Wizardden.com covering a new unofficial format. Tiny Leaders! Recently there has been a lot of chatter about this format so I decided to give it a shot.

What exactly is Tiny Leaders? Simply put it is EDH cut down in size, time, and chaos. 50 card decks, 25 life, one on one, best out of three, 10 card sideboards, and most notably converted mana cost three or less.  If you want the full break down and banlist, those can be found on blogspot under MTG: Tiny Leaders.
When I first heard about this my mind started racing. It began to sink in how much there is to work with. It's like learning to play magic all over again with all these silly new ideas. I was first going to build a deck with Yasova Dragon Claw or Animar Soul of Elements with X cost hydras, but then a truly wacky idea hit me. Jeskai Ascendancy! I actively avoid the card in sanctioned formats since it seems to be working really hard to rival Eggs as the most boring deck ever to sit across from. However I let the Johnny run wild when playing casually. Here is the result.

Tiny Shu
Commander: Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest

Lands (17)
Celestial Colonnade
Clifftop Retreat
Drifting Meadow
Faerie Conclave
Forgotten Cave
Glacial Fortress
Hallowed Fountain
Lonely Sandbar
Mystic Monastery
Mutavault
Remote Isle
Sacred Foundry
Seachrome Coast
Secluded Steppe
Smoldering Crater
Steam Vents
Sulfur Falls

Creature (7)
Blistercoil Weird
Cunning Sparkmage
Enclave Cryptologist
Gold Myr
Silver Myr
Vulshok Sorcerer
Young Pyromancer

Spells (25)
Artful Dodge
Brainstorm
Council's Judgment
Crimson Wisps
Cyclonic Rift
Divination
Elixir of Immortality
Gitaxian Probe
Grapeshot
Idyllic Tutor
Impulse
Izzet Charm
Izzet Keyrune
Jeskai Ascendancy
Mana Tithe
Oona's Grace
Paradise Mantle
Peer Through Depths
Ponder
Preordain
Skullcrack
Spell Snare
Swords to Plowshares
Telling Time
Think Twice

Having played a few games with this I can say I am very happy with how this turned out. Currently this has been made out of cards I already had with a few cheap exceptions. This is one of the best parts of this format, it is extremely budget friendly to build one. There are a couple cards I will be finding room for soon as I pick them up such as Lightning Greaves and Wind Zendikon. Somewhat surprisingly the combo actually works quite well.

Local support for the format seems to be growing quickly. Other than the budget there a number of great reasons to put one together. Don't like the long chaotic EDH games? This is a streamlined singleton format with one on one play and sideboards! Want to teach someone the fundamentals of EDH? Show them how to make a Tiny Leader deck first and cut out all the most crazy cards that are overpowered and hard to understand. The last big point I want to make about this format today is that the games are quick. Sick of waiting for Sneeze Rhinos to keel over at your local FNM? Whip out your tiny leaders and play some Magic while you wait.

Thank you for joining us once again. Share with us here or on Facebook what leaders have your attention. This has been Ariel at Wizardden.com.

How R/W Tokens got their groove back!

Hey guys, DannyO back again and this time I wanted to go in depth on the deck that got 2nd place at the SCG Open I wrote about in my last article.

The deck is R/W Aggro and here's the list to refresh your memory.

R/W Aggro by,
Danny Goldstein:

Lands: 23
4 Battlefield Forge
2 Mana Confluence
6 Mountain
5 Plains
4 Temple of Triumph
2 Wind-Scarred Crag

Creatures: 12
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Monastery Mentor
3 Seeker of the Way
1 Soulfire Grand Master

Spells: 25
2 Collateral Damage
4 Hordeling Outburst
4 Lightning Strike
3 Magma Jet
2 Outpost Siege
4 Raise the Alarm
4 Stoke the Flames
2 Valorous Stance

Sideboard: 15
2 Hushwing Gryff
1 Stormbreath Dragon
2 Erase
2 Magma Spray
2 Wild Slash
2 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
2 End Hostilities
2 Glare of Heresy

Let's start from the beginning in my FRF brew and the reason why I'm most excited to talk about this archetype.

I was at my weekly team meeting a couple weeks ago and we were talking about the FRF spoilers. At that time, we had the entire list. We were talking about the cards that might be good and brainstorming some deck ideas. I had been playing Red Deck Wins for a couple weeks so my mind was kind of focused there while we were discussing the new cards. Specifically, Monastery Mentor and Soulfire Grand Master. The more I thought about them, the more I realized that they would be ridiculous paired with red. So, I opened up my deck builder app on my phone and started throwing a list together. The deck was lots of 4-ofs and pretty straightforward. The creature base ended up like this:

4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Soulfire Grand Master
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Monastery Mentor

Then, to get the most use out of Mentor, I figured I'd want as many playable 1 cost spells as possible as well as the best burn spells in the format, so I went with something like this;

4 Collateral Damage
4 Wild Slash
4 Magma Jet
4 Stoke the Flames
2 Break Through the Line
2 Deflecting Palm
2 Tormenting Voice

After running a few games, it became painfully obvious that it wasn't working. Convoking Stoke was almost impossible with the lack of red creatures, the curve was clunky and slow, it just didn't work. I wanted to put in Hordeling Outburst to help with Stoke the Flames, but I didn't want to clog up the 3-drop slot. Instead, I jammed in 4 Raise the Alarm in place of the Voices and Breaks for the thought of having more pressure on board. While Raise the Alarm was great, the rest of the deck wasn't flowing very well still. I wasn't sure what to do with it. I went home and slept on it.

The next day I thought a lot about Soulfire Grand Master and realized that he isn't good in the early game. He's not a straight-up replacement for Seeker of the Way, so I cut the Soulfires to 2, and got in 4 Seekers. After a few more games, it was definitely playing much better but still not close to being good. At least I was on the right track. I took it to FNM that week and it played better than expected. I decided to keep working on it. At the next team meeting, I continued testing it and was still hesitant to put it Hordeling Outburst because then it was just too close to Jeskai Tokens, but eventually came to and put it in. At this point, I think the deck looked closer to this:

4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Seeker of the Way
2 Soulfire Grand Master
4 Monastery Mentor
4 Goblin Rabblemaster

4 Raise the Alarm
4 Hordeling Outburst
4 Magma Jet
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Wild Slash

I was pretty happy with this list, but it just kept feeling like it was missing something...

Fellow team member Nick Crabbs had been playing Jeskai Tokens and eventually convinced me to just play his deck. I was so close to his list, that I caved and made the changes. However, I went home that night and started writing on the SCG Open top 8 lists and saw that the R/W Aggro deck that got 2nd place was really close to where I was on my list. This gave me a lot of hope for the deck, but I didn't make any changes. It was late and I slept on it again. I woke up this morning to an email from SCG recapping that event and even had a little blog about that deck. The writer of that column made an interesting point. He thought that the deck was missing something... ME TOO!!!

He compared it to U/W Heroic where their goal is to put out a threat and let it win the game on its own while protecting it. In my deck however, the threat is Rabblemaster or Mentor. The only problem was I didn't have anything to protect them with. Then he said something that blew my mind... Thoughtseize!

Probably the best 1-mana hand disruption spell in the entire game, but it's a third color. Well, splashing for black makes it Mardu and mana is pretty nice for wedges right now so it's really not that far-fetched. It makes sense too. It's able to pick out spot removal and board wipe spells like Anger of the Gods, End Hostilities and Crux of Fate, allowing you more opportunities to untap with a Mentor or Rabble. On top of that, we're running some Valorous Stance because it's great at protecting your threats while not being just a conditional protection spell. Being able to plow through Courser of Kruphix and Siege Rhino is great too, all while providing Prowess triggers.

This was really exciting so I decided to go back to the app on my phone and recreate my list. The mana base was pretty easy, just adding Nomad Outpost, a couple Caves of Koilos, some Bloodstained Mires and a Swamp. Done. One thing that was bothering me was that I was making such a huge commitment in the mana base for 4 Thoughtseize. They aren't double-black so they're easy to cast, but I felt like I should be taking advantage of black a little bit more and I shortly thereafter thought of Mardu Charm.

Every mode is useful throughout the game. It can kill blockers, it can be instant speed Duress for more hand disruption, and finally, it can even make MOAR tokens! Another awesome part of splashing black is the access to sideboard treats, like Crackling Doom. It's perfect for combating heroic strategies. Abzan Advantage is another great sideboard choice. It's perfect against Courser decks and Jeskai Ascendancy. Temur Ascendancy Combo is something to look out for too! Also, Frontier Siege and Outpost Siege are getting played quite a bit too. Not to mention it also Bolsters my team a little, so it's removal while also advancing my board-state.

Finally, Since I'm going pretty wide with a lot of tokens, I figured Sorin, Solemn Visitor fits in ok too.

After all of this, my deck ended up like this:

Lands: 23
4 Battlefield Forge
4 Bloodstained Mire
2 Caves of Koilos
2 Mountain
4 Nomad Outpost
1 Plains
1 Swamp
1 Temple of Silence
4 Temple of Triumph

Creatures: 12
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Monastery Mentor
2 Seeker of the Way
2 Soulfire Grand Master

Spells: 25
4 Hordeling Outburst
4 Magma Jet
2 Mardu Charm
4 Raise the Alarm
1 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Thoughtseize
2 Valorous Stance

Sideboard: 15
3 Abzan Advantage
2 Chandra, Pyromaster
3 Crackling Doom
2 Mardu Charm
1 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
2 Searing Blood
1 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
1 Valorous Stance

The sideboard is just a rough draft since I haven't had a chance to test with this yet, but it feels like a decent place to start. All-in-all, I'm really happy with how this list looks and I get my first chance to test it out tomorrow night for Grand Prix Trial Kyoto at Wizard Den. I don't expect to do fantastic, but it's definitely getting better! Regardless with how I do, I'll be sure to let you guys know how the deck plays out and mention any changes, if any, that come to mind.

If you like the idea, give a try and let me know what you think, or tell me what you would do different.

Here's to breaking formats!

Cheers,

Breaking down Abzan Aggro from the SCG Open Washington, DC

Hey guys, DannyO here with WizardDen.com and team Rogue T3ch! Today I wanted to talk about the first major(ish) standard constructed tournament to feature the new cards from Fate Reforged and see what people have come up with. I'll stick to the top 8, but there are several honorable mentions outside the Top-8 worth discussing.

Anyway, the top-8 was fairly diverse here with 2 Abzan Aggro, 1 Jeskai Aggro, 1 Abzan Midrange, 1 Sultai Ramp, 1 U/W Heroic, 1 R/W Aggro, and 1 Sultai Control taking it all.

All this means is that the format is still all over the place as it has been. With the release of Fate Reforged, standard was definitely shaken up, but for the most part, it seems like anything goes.

That being said, let's look at the two Abzan Aggro lists. For the most part, they're fairly similar. The biggest difference I notice, is Ryan Boswell's 6th place deck played Soldier of the Pantheon and Warden of the First Tree. Nance's 3rd place played Wingmate Roc, Courser of Kruphix and Tasigur, the Golden Fang.

Despite the difference in placing, in the head to head I would expect Nance's to win most of the time. I really like Boswell's 6th place deck, however:

Creatures:
4x Fleecemane Lion
4x Rakshasa Deathdealer
4x Siege Rhino
4x Soldier of the Pantheon
4x Warden of the First Tree
2x Boon Satyr
3x Anafenza, The foremost

Spells:
4x Abzan Charm
3x Bile Blight
4x Valorous Stance

Lands:
2x Forest
2x Plains
3x Swamp
3x Llanowar Wastes
4x Mana Confluence
4x Sandsteppe Citadel
1x Temple of Malady
1x Temple of Silence
4x Windswept Heath
1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Sideboard
1x Murderous Cut
1x Utter End
2x Nissa, Worldwaker
3x Drown in Sorrow
2x Glare of Heresy
2x Hunt the Hunter
4x Thoughtseize

Truthfully, Boswell's deck looks like it's extremely consistent. The mana-base gets a lot of help hitting colors with 4x Mana Confluence and he is practically running 4x Copies of every creature. The advantage to running a curve like this is just statistics. Mulligans go down, more hands look the same and have the same plan, and they become easy decks to pilot successfully after some practice.

Let's talk about Warden of the First Tree. I like him in these aggro lists, because he can essentially give you 8 copies of 2 cost 3/3's. Him and Fleecemane Lion of course. Later when you don't have much to do, he can become a lot more annoying, not so dissimilar to Fleecemane Lion as well. There are many decks that can struggle to go wide enough to handle 3/3's that early so I think he's a great addition. Plus having things to do on turn-1 alongside Soldier of the Pantheon puts the pressure on early, which is great. If you're thinking about picking him up in speculation of a price jump, I'd do it now just in case this deck picks up much steam. Any deck that wants to run this guy, probably wants 4 and that's a good sign that he can see a rise in price if more people catch on.

Nance's 3rd Place List:

Creatures:
4x Fleecemane Lion
4x Rakshasa Deathdealer
4x Siege Rhino
3x Wingmate Roc
3x Courser of Kruphix
3x Anafenza, The foremost
2x Tasigur, the Golden Fang

Planeswalkers:
1x Sorin, Solemn Visitor

Spells:
2x Abzan Charm
3x Bile Blight
2x Thoughtseize
4x Hero's Downfall

Lands:
1x Forest
2x Plains
3x Caves of Kolios
3x Llanowar Wastes
4x Sandsteppe Citadel
3x Temple of Malady
1x Temple of Plenty
2x Temple of Silence
4x Windswept Heath
2x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Sideboard
1x Back to Nature
1x Bile Blight
1x Murderous Cut
1x Elspeth, Sun's Champion
1x Liliana Vess
1x Nissa, Worldwaker
1x Sorin, Solemn Visitor
4x Drown in Sorrow
3x Glare of Heresy
1x Thoughtseize

This list looks mean, and with Tasigur in an aggro list, spicy. Its sacrificing a little bit of the early game board presence and consistency for more powerful creatures and spells. Luckily for this deck, it has Sorin mainboard (the best walker from Khans). Sorin in an aggro list can easily put games out of reach.

All in all, Abzan Aggro has been putting up a lot of good numbers lately and I expect this deck to hang around a bit so this is definitely something to keep in mind while brewing.

.

Happy Brewing,

Thanks for watching be sure to check out the Fate Reforged prerelease videos next week!!

New Beginnings, Fate Reforged Standard.

This Friday dawns the beginning of Fate Reforged. This set, more than the middle sets of other recent blocks has me drooling over the amazing cards Fate Reforged will bring. I believe the set to be so powerful that instead of just spraying Febreeze on the format which has been the middle sets job in the past, it will stem new decks that will send plenty of time at the top tables. I don’t believe this set will shake up the game as much as rotation does but I think it is the closest that we will see from a middle set for years to come. That being said, there are plenty of decks that will receive some new toys including the deck that I have sleeved up for Friday that can be found in Nick’s recent article.

Today I have two lists that I would like to share with you as interesting decks you could play going forward: Mono Red Devotion and BR Dragons. Both of these decks haven’t spent much time if any in the limelight but with the addition of Fate Reforged I believe now is going to be their time to shine. I’ll start with the Mono Red decklist:

The sideboard for this deck actually has quite a bit of versatility and can be built for whatever your expected meta may be. If you are in a Whip heavy area, Burn Away is a fine card to make sure you get rid of any value in the graveyard. If your opponent is on the all wrath and removal plan there are even a plethora of burn spells available to you giving you the option to completely change the way your red deck operates (Lightning Strike, Wild Slash, Stoke the Flames, Collateral Damage, Etc.)

One thing that may come as a big surprise is the nonexistent Goblin Rabblemaster in the main deck. I left him on the side purely due to his unexciting interaction with Fanatic of Mogis. Going in to Fate Reforged we don’t have anything like a Boros Reckoner to capitalize on the existence of devotion which means there isn't a lot of wiggle room for creatures with less than two devotion. Ordinarily jamming cards into a deck just to half fill a hole a deck has is incorrect. That isn't the case with this deck though as we have both Flamewake Phoenix and Prophetic Flamespeaker to fill the holes which are phenomenal in the three spot for this deck. Flamewake Phoenix is an easy way to push some damage and can be recurred fairly easy in this deck between Fanatic of Mogis, Ashcloud Phoenix or any creature as long as you have a Titan’s Strength.

This deck also has the potential of the same fast starts of the current iteration of mono red. Start with a Monastery Swiftspear into Titan’s Strength and it’s off to the races. I also have included Hammerhand in the deck as a four of not only to allow for a ton of damage to be pushed through with the +1/+1 and target creature can’t block this turn but for the devotion that it provides to Fanatic of Mogis.

Overall, I think Mono Red Devotion has a lot of potential and it could play a very key role in the development of the new world of Standard even if it isn’t quite as exciting as the next deck I would like to share with you. A running joke we have is that if Will Lotz of Team Roguet3ch can go a minimum of 4-1 with four copies of Crucible of Fire in his deck, he’ll make $20 off of Matt Petro. While this deck may not play the insane tribal enchantment the deck sure does have some sweet dragons. Without blabbering too much, I give you Team RogueT3ch’s BR Dragons:

8x Swamp
Before I go in to the fine details I must be honest, there hasn’t been a lot of opportunity for us to discuss the sideboard plan for this deck. A lot of that stems from uncertainty as to where the meta-game will shift. Most of the sideboard will include more specialized removal be it Magma Jet, Anger of the Gods, or Drown in Sorrow. The main board already plays out very effectively in controlling the board until you draw any one of your creatures. which has the potential to instantly take over a game. This deck doesn’t have the counter-spells to be considered hard control but the one sided wrath effects on top of extremely efficient removal is more than enough to win games. The main reason behind playing this deck would easily be Crux of Fate. This card pretty much reads “Wrath your opponents board” with few exceptions. Facing down Stormbreath Dragon with this card may seem awkward but when combined with four copies of Hero’s Downfall and three Murderous Cut’s the deck is very well positioned to always get the one sided wrath effect. This feels very much like a control deck only with faster access to the mid game and rarely needing to go the late in order to close out a game.
That’s all for this week be sure to check out the video that should be out either today or tomorrow and if you are interested in winning the KTK Bloodstained Mire and Polluted Delta on MTGO be sure to subscribe before 2/14/15 (be sure to set your subscriptions to public or I won’t know who to get these to)
Thanks for the read I’d love to hear how everyone’s week of standard went with the addition of Fate Reforged!! Let us know below!

New Decks for post Fate Reforged. Red/Green Aggro

Nick here with WizardDen.com's Team Rogue T3ch. With Fate Reforged singles available for pre-orders, its time to start brewing! Without further delays.....Red/Green Aggro

Mainboard:
4x elvish mystic
3x Rattleclaw mystic
4x heir of the wilds
3x Yasova Dragonclaw
4x Goblin Rabblemaster
2x Boon Satyr
3x Shaman of the Great Hunt
3x Ashcloud Phoenix
4x Stormbreath dragon
3x Craters Claws
2x Temur Battle Rage

Land:
4x Wooded Foothills
4x Temple of Abandon
2x Mana Confluence
8x Mountain
7x Forrest

Sideboard:
4x Wild slash
2x Hornet Nest
3x Lightning strike
1x Barrage of Boulders
3x Destructive Revelry
2x magma jet

This deck really benefits from a good curve, and consistency. With Stormbreath Dragon at the high end of the mana curve, you have a great finisher all the while playing punishing earily game cards with Goblin Rabblemaster, Heir of the Wilds, Yasova Dragonclaw.

In this particular build Yasova Dragonclaw looks like a beast. After you have advanced a board state, this guy lets you steal a block from your opponent and push in lots of extra damage. If its not dealt with, it can easily make combat extremely awkward for an opponent.

Coming down as a 4 drop with haste, Shaman of the Great Hunt can produce some stupid good board states. Although, his Ferocious ability is potentially good in late game situations, he really shines in an aggro build like this. The ability buff all your guys is really really good. He puts 4 power on the board with haste, and came make those goblin rabble master tokens get real good.

Temur Battle Rage, looks super sneaky, you are probably going to have more then 4 power on board, so you can count on the ferocious trigger. Looks like a great combat trick.

This looks like a great Fate Reforged Standard deck. Super consistent, comes out fast and and big.

Thats it for now.

New Banned and (unbanned) List Release

Nick here with Wizardden.com 's Team Rogue T3ch. As many of you noticed this morning Wizard's of the Coast release their update to the Banned and Restricted lists.

Banned in Modern

- Birthing Pod
- Treasure Cruise
- Dig Through Time

Unbanned in Modern

- Golgari Grave Troll

Banned in Legacy

- Treasure Cruise

Unbanned in Legacy

- Worldgorger Dragon

Legacy

- Treasure Cruise (Restricted)
- Gifts Ungiven (Unrestrcited)

My first thought?

But after reviewing WOTC article the bannings are completely understandable. Lets be honest, we all knew Treasure Cruise was just a little too good, and was extremely likely to see the ban hammer.

Birthing Pod is understandable just from the amount of pod decks that show up (and win) at high level modern events. Although Modern Pod players are extremely disappointed, but again for the integrity of the format, its a good ban.

Dig Through Time is a little bit of a head scratcher. WOTC official reasoning is, "while a Delver deck might use Treasure Cruse over Dig Through Time banning one but not the other would do little to change the deck."

To an extend they are correct, R/U Delver would probably just swap into Dig. However this is a slightly weaker trade, and probably not worth a ban. Dig is slightly harder to cast, and only nets 1 card (although probably gains 2x cards that are extremely helpful in the match). Unlike Treasure Cruse, it doesn't generate the same raw card advantage.

Legacy – (Section Written by Joseph McKercher)

With treasure cruise banned, shardless BUG delver might see a resurgence as the plan of having
2 for 1’s is easier when they are unable to Ancestral recall back into the game.  RUG delver might see a resurgence as well as tarmogoyfs are bigger now that you don’t exile your graveyard to draw three
cards. This should bring a bit of diversity to the control decks that exist.
Reanimator is currently a deck that doesn't have much of a use for Worldgorger dragon.  It
needs a bit of a redesign for it to get around the loop that is created.  It is an interesting piece to an
already flexible deck that could fight through hate.  It may bring about an entirely new version of
Reanimator, only time will tell.

Vintage –
Having 5x Ancestral Recall in your deck, even if situational, made decks more consistent in
Vintage.  It won’t hurt anything that currently exists too much but it’s a limiting factor still.
The bigger note is gifts being unbanned.  It allows decks to put more toolbox cards in and is a
good way to fight shop decks as if you’re getting to 4 with a deck designed around gifts, you can include
a slot for hate against more decks.  Gifts does a lot more for combo and consistency then Treasure
Cruise will ever do.  This may get banned again depending on how strong it ends up in the format.

Thats it for now guys.
