It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Temporal Trespass, and it might be broken.

With pre-orders for Fate Reforged ready to go, waking up to new spoilers is always awesome. Waking up to ones that say, "take an extra turn" make me re-think what I am doing with my life.

At first glance Temporal Trespass looks good, really really good. It has possibilities in ever format. However after the Treasure Cruise blunder. I am wondering why Wizards of The Coast is reprint power 9 level abilities (and with delve, play-ability).

Best guess? Broken can be fun for a while. I don't believe that Treasure Cruise or Temporal Trespass are broken in Standard. Treasure Cruise itself sees limited play. However it's eternal formats that these cards show off their stuff. Red/Blue Delver with the addition of Treasure Cruise has been wreaking face in Modern for months, prompting many to call for a ban.

For now we'll have to live with new version Time Walk and Ancestral Recall (with delve) hanging around and enjoy a little flashback to broken.

Get spoiled! (Some Fate Reforged Spoilers)

Christian with wizardden.com here to talk about cards spoiled from the upcoming set Fate Reforged! Pre-Orders for Boxes and Cases are now up! With the small set coming early this year that means we have spoilers already, no more introduction, lets jump right in!

This is Ugin. He is a spirit dragon. I have to say I am not all that impressed with him. Sure, Lightning bolt on a 'walker's plus ability is exceptionally good. I just don't like these over the top colorless walkers. I should mention I didn't like Karn either. The minus is also very, a pernicious deed on a stick of sorts. I am sure he will find a place. The format is all midrange and hornet queen is hard cast on a regular basis and minus for zero kills all the tokens so it will find a home. Where? Your guess is as good as mine...

Yaaaaaaay! A dragon! We all knew dragons were coming and this guy is pretty sweet. Two color legendary is not what we were expecting but I'll take it. With these Rakdos-colored dragon comes a new mechanic, Dash. Dash is kind of like splice onto arcane but for creatures. Instead of throwing him out there for his normal cost, you can pay the Dash cost and he gains haste but returns to your hand at the end of your turn. I see him being dashed more often than not. With sarkhan and Stormbreath in the format as strong five drops for red decks I can't say he will get a lot of love, but he's around and we are better for it.

Hey! Necrotic Ooze meets Tombstalker! This guy gains the ability of all creatures delved to cast him. That's neat in theory but with Whip of Erebos in almost every deck in standard, delving away dudes is not what standard players are wanting to do. With that being said I think he is really sweet but unless wizards gives us a good answer to whip I don't think he will be seeing love in standard.

Okay, this card is weird. It showcases the new mechanic "manifest". So if I understand correctly,  it allows you to play the top card of your library as a 2/2 Morph creature. That's sweet. If you have a courser you can turn unwanted draws into ground beaters or cheat creatures into play a turn early for only a few more mana to play and flip. I don't know if this card will see play but the mechanic seems very good in limited and possible constructed play.

Going to finish up with another new mechanic displayed here "Bolster". Bolster loves big butts and loves making them! So, depending on the bolster number, it gives your creature with the lowest toughness(Butt) X amount of +1 Counters depending on the shown bolster amount. Kind of neat.
That's all for now,
Untill next time.

Still confused on how standard will rotate?

Here at WizardDen we get alot of questions. I'm still amazed at the amount of people who play table-top magic at home who do a google search for "magic stores" and call use to ask rules questions, luckily for us we have no problem answering them.

However the most common question we've received since August has been how standard rotation works. There seems to be alot of confusion about how standard rotation works in general, but added confusion because a new system has been announced.

Good thing for all of us Wizard's of the Coast made some pretty graphics to save us from our lack of quality google searches.

First this shows how standard use to rotate:

Each block is represented by 3 color coordinated blocks with one core set a year. Traditionally a new block would be released in the fall rotating out the block from 2 years ago, and last years core set.

Starting with the Spring of 2016:

Starting with spring of 2016 blocks will only have two sets and rotate each other out more regularly. Whats absent from this? A core set. Magic 2016 (release July 2015) will be the last core set. Each block will have a rotation time of 18 months in standard before it rotates.

So what does rotation look like for the next few sets?

Hopefully this makes the questions easier. Again, must thank Wizard's of the Coast for creating these nice graphics.

The lesser lesser player cards

Hello again! This is Ariel once again, I have been away for a little while, but as promised here is the second segment on underplayed cards. This time we are looking at the lower converted mana costs which means I will also be considering older formats when relevant. Lets get started.
Starting us off today we have Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. These may not be the oppressive days of Nightveil Specter, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be playing with the closest thing to Gaea's Cradle we may ever see in standard. Mono green has made great use of it of course, but we still have strong devotion in white and red. Also it is amusing that Singing Bell Strike on Kiora's Follower, Voyaging Satyr, or Karametra's Acolyte can and will go infinite with enough devotion. Looking at modern, both black and green can do some very gross things. I'm looking at you Genesis Wave and Phyrexian Obliterator.

Crater's Claws is a very powerful Fireball effect. The two extra damage for maintaining pressure is great. In this age of board stalls, putting your extra mana straight to their face is great. I'm not saying this should be a four of or start replacing Stoke the Flames, however having a few in the at least in the side board is helpful in those more grindy matchups. Icy Blast is a huge blow out for all the same reasons. Barrage of Boulders is another way to break out of board stalls, but I can't say for sure it it would play in standard anywhere as amazing as it does in draft.
Embodiment of Spring is a fun little guy. I have a bit of a soft spot for it from the days of four color midrange. Being able to block and fix your mana is great. When paired with Courser of Kruphix you can hold onto one or two ramp effects and then get some added life off of your patience.
Hero of Leina Tower is a warrior. I have already seen some Abzan warrior lists with protection spells, but I have yet to see anyone add in this explosive creature. Before rotation I saw it do tons of damage out of the blue in some mono green aggro lists.
Stubborn Denial has slowly been creeping it's way back into decks as removal has proven more and more powerful. Most all threats these days are four power making this the catch all when protecting your board. Brain Maggot is also very effective at protecting your advance. With so many ways to invade your opponent's hand, adding one more that can also attack is a very rude way to shut your opponent out. Adding to our list of great protective plays is Quickling. In smaller aggressive decks it lets you keep the pressure on, and in larger beat down decks it lets you maintain powerful card advantage with enter the battlefield effects and sheer power.
The biggest surprise play since Khans has come out has got to be Deflecting Palm. Throwing their alpha strike back at them or their board has got to be one of the most amusing things to do in standard. I also can't wait to see someone through it back against a modern Jeskai Ascendancy deck.
Eidolon of the Great Revel is no big secret however it doesn't seem to see much standard play. With Jeskai Tokens seeing more play and Sorin, Solemn Visitor's plus ability lasting a whole turn cycle now is great time to bring them back into standard. To a lesser extend Eidolon of Rhetoric is quite amusing against these spell spamming decks.
Godsend is worth a look now days. Sticking one on a Siege Rhino is a great way to deal with those pesky Hornet Queens. Keeping with the trend of breaking board stalls it might also be time to give Thassa, God of the Sea a good look. Reaper of the Wilds may not have the life drain of the rhinos, but it does win the rhino war and dodge removal.

I am happy to say that many of the cards in my original list have since begun to see more play. I am excited to see where the meta goes. So far no one deck seems to be holding the top position for very long, but perhaps their is something we have all over looked. Until next time, thank you for reading.
